Our events (26.04 - 27.04)
1. Book Club Meeting (The Adventure of the Speckled Band, marine_0204)
This story is full of clever clues, mystery and twists. What comes to mind when you think of a detective story?
Any beautiful:
There will be plot twists. Usually someone dies, and it is incredibly uninteresting read because the unexpected happens. Um, it's one of those stories that you it's very hard to predict. So that's what I think of with detective stories. It makes you work. It makes your brain think. It's not just easy to figure out.
What details first made Holmes suspicious about Dr Roylott?
Bruce:
I think that after consuming the details from the coroner's office, each girl would be subjected to 250 pounds after their marriage. Holmes, his suspicion basically solidified that the doctor might be behind the killing.
Why do you think Helen Stoner trusted Holmes instead of going to the police?
Nin:
It's a mysterious case and Sherlock Holmes is a detective, and, police are always late in the situation when everything is done, so, maybe they cannot handle it well. They also do not have any passion, so, I think that's why Sherlock Holmes was more trusted than police.
How does Conan Doyle build suspense throughout the story?
Any beautiful:
Julia, before she died tragically, she was saying, “the speckled band”, the speckled band. So that builds suspense. You wonder if the gypsies who wear the scarves, if they were involved. The fact that the doctor had a baboon and a cheetah on as pets, you wonder if there is a relation with that, if that contributed to it. There was a safe with milk on top of a bowl of, and a dish of milk, and also the fake bell, so you wonder how it all ties in, and at the end you, you realize that the animals had nothing to do with it, but the one that was connected with the doctor that was in that safe or in that cage in the room with the milk on top, like in the bowl. So, you wondered, what was the speckled band? You wondered why there was a ventilation system that did not work or it was like a dummy one. So it just, it's numerous things. It was a very unusual story. So those are the things that grabbed my attention.
What does the speckled band symbolize once you know the truth?
Bruce:
I thought that the snake had speckles on its skin, so that's why it was called “speckled band”. And the fact that a snake looks like a band, especially when you see, when you can't see it properly, because we know that the night when Julia was killed, there wasn't much lighting and the first exclamation from Watson was the speckled band, because it was the snake was wrapped around the doctor's head like a band.
Do you think Doctor Roylott's punishment was fair? Why or why not?
Nin:
It was fair, because what he had done to others would come back to him and yes, he deserved this. So, the punishment was fair, I guess.
2. What would a world with superpowers be like? (27.04, Mikozz)
"I would love to fly. I would be able to fly to different countries, and it would be much cheaper than buying a ticket."
Any beautiful:
"I can feel what other people are feeling. I'm naturally empathetic, so if a person is in turmoil, when I meet them, I feel that connection right away. Also, most dogs love me. My mom calls me a dog whisperer. Taking on people's feelings and emotions, being an empath, and also loving dogs are those powers..."
Nin:
"I will ask them if they are ready to sacrifice the thing they are most attached with. If they can sacrifice that then they are worthy of the superpower."
Ryan:
"I would like to talk about my mom, because I love my mom."
"If you watch a TV show called "the Boys", it talks about the world that has superpowers in it, and that world is terrible, very horrible. All the superpowers use their powers for themselves, not for the sake of others. People are naturally selfish for some reason."
