Laxman's on a Date

In our ever-growing FluentEnglish Community, talent flows in every direction - but every now and then, a story shines so brightly that it pulls all eyes toward it. For the May Writing Contest, that story was Unplanned Date, written by our very own @Laxman.
This charming and emotionally engaging story captured the essence of surprise, connection, and how the best moments in life often arrive…uninvited.

The Winning Story: Unplanned Date
“Okay, that’s it for today. You have to complete these assignments by next week… nothing too significant, but make sure your answers are clear and precise. Use only A4-size paper. Any further instructions will be shared in the whatsapp group. bye, guys.”
That was how our open university class wrapped up. We only had to come to college on weekends, but still, somehow, it always felt like an eternity.
We started wrapping up our stuff from the bench. I muttered to myself, “Pen, notebook, laptop, water bottle… that’s it. Okay.”
While walking downstairs, Shrikant and I were chatting about some random things. When we reached the college gate, we said our goodbyes and went in opposite directions.
“Laxman, wait!” …a beautiful voice hit my ears.
I turned back. And there she was.
“Huh? Did you call me?”
“Obviously. Who else is Laxman here?”
“Oh, sorry. I don’t recognize you,” I said.
“I’m Sayli. I’m in your class.”
I knew exactly who she was… but, you know, attitude.
“So, where do you live?” she asked.
“G…….” I said. “And you?”
“T…….” she said.
“Oh, we live in completely opposite directions. Are you taking the train?”
“Yeah… company me. Or if you’ve got plans with your girlfriend, you can go,” she said.
“No!, I’m single,” I replied, laughing… like she said something funny.
We end up sitting on a bench in the middle of the platform, chatting about random things. Some of it didn’t even made sense. But somehow, I was having so much fun without realizing it.
She was saying something… passionately, and I was just looking at her.
Listening…? Barely.
Her lips moved slowly. Her eyes lit up now and then. She was bewitching. And I was just… staring. Ogling?, maybe. Then suddenly, our eyes met.
I looked down immediately.
for a second, I thought I was done for. Caught. There was a moment of silence. and then the sound of a train. It was hers.
I sat up to say goodbye. But she didn’t move. I was confused, I looked at her and said,
“Hurry up!, don’t you have to go?”
“It’s okay. I’ll take another one… Do you have somewhere to be?” she asked.
“No…?” I replied, with a confused face.
We kept talking for another hour, just sitting there. then suddenly!
“There’s this coffee shop nearby. Want to have some coffee? It’s too noisy here,” she said.
A rush of something, happiness? Excitement? Maybe something else entirely passed through me. Like every cell in my body. my heart started racing.
Is this a date? Does she like me? Why?
My mind spun, I tried to act cool but I was already smitten.
“Sure.”
